Four Ravenshaw students drown in Mahanadi

Cuttack: In a tragic incident, four students of Ravenshaw University drowned while another had a brush with death while taking bath in Mahanadi river today.

The deceased have been identified as Sahanwaz Khan, Devi Prasad, Pyarimohan Pradhan and Priti Ranjan Das, varsity sources said.

The bodies have been sent to SCB Medical College and Hospital, varsity’s vice-chancellor Prakash Sarangi said, terming the incident harrowing.

The incident took place when five students belonging to Information Science and Telecommunication (IST) and Information Technology and Management (ITM) departments of the varsity went to Jobra barrage to take bath at around 3.30 pm.

One of them slipped into the deep water. Others were also trapped in the strong current of the river while trying to rescue their friend. While local fisherman rescued one of them, fire brigade personnel and ODRAF team fished out others’ bodies.

As the news spread, hundreds of varsity students rushed to the spot. Meanwhile, Sarangi, the varsity registrar, the deputy commissioner of police and the district collector reached the spot to oversee the rescue operation.
