2 minor sisters drown in pond in Odisha village
Nabarangpur: In yet another incident of drowning, two minor sisters died in Kumudaguda village under Jharigaon block of Nabarangpur district today.
According to sources, the matter came to light after 10-year-old Nila Santa and her younger sister 8-year-old Champa did not return after going to the pond to take bath along with some friends.
Subsequently, the family members informed the Fire Department and with the help of some village youths the bodies of the two minor girls were recovered.
Later, Jharigaon police reached the spot and started an investigation.
Multiple incidents of deaths due to drowning have been reported in the state this year.
On June 9, a 14-year-old boy along with her mother was swept away in Baitarani River near Bandal village of Jajpur district. Later, the boy died while undergoing treatment at Jajpur Town Medical.
Earlier this year, the Special Relief Commissioner and Disaster Management Secretary, B P Sethi had informed that Odisha government has registered 1,292 deaths due to drowning between 2015-16 and 2017-18 with an average of almost 431 deaths per annum.
While 246 cases of drowning were reported in 2015-16, it went up to 428 in 2016-17 and 618 in 2017-18. This, however, did not include drowning deaths during flood as such cases have been reported as flood-related deaths.
