Boat capsizes in Samal Barrage, 2 missing

Angul: Two persons went missing while three others were rescued after a boat capsized in Lower Samal Barrage in Angul district on Thursday.

As per sources, the mishap occurred this afternoon at around 2:30 pm when five employees of a contract firm of Mahanadi Vihar in Cuttack were carrying out the barrage survey work. A few others claimed that the employees had gone to carry out a pipeline survey of a private industry.

The boat capsized following sudden release of water from the Barrage, sources added.

Soon after it flipped, three workers of the firm managed to swim across safely to the shore, while two others, identified as operator Ashok Kumar from Parjang and Engineer of the firm Ramesh Satapathy from Berhampur, went missing.

Getting information, Samal Police station IIC and a team of ODRAF have rushed to the spot and are carrying out search operation to trace the missing persons.

Speaking to OTV over phone, Talcher SDPO Hemanta Kumat Panda said, “There is no confirmation about the name of the firm. The labourers who managed to swim across do not know much about the firm. Two persons are suspected to have drowned. Search operation is on and we have closed the Barrage gates.”
