Bhubaneswar: The state government’s official website—www.orissa.gov.in—providing vital information on the developments has drawn sarcasm from several quarters after a blooper came to light.

To reach out to the viewers across the globe, the state government had facilitated live webcast of the annual Car festival of the three presiding deities of Lord Jagannath temple. However, the live webcast on its portal read ‘Cart festival’ instead of ‘Car festival’.(image)

“If we literally translate this for a non-Oriya or for any translation purpose, we can only put it as ‘Chariot Festival.’ Even ‘Car’ can be used since it has been traditionally used. But to me ‘cart’ is not the appropriate usage of the word,” said Dr Himanshu Sekhar Mohapatrta, HoD, English Department, Utkal University.

While most of the portals and national English dailies transcribe this as ‘Rath Yatra,’ the way the state government portal has intended to attract the eyeballs has been marred with ambiguity.
