Bhubaneswar: Opposition BJP has urged the Speaker of Orissa Legislative Assembly to disqualify its suspended MLA Bhimsen Choudhury from the membership of the House.

Choudhury was suspended from the party last year on charge of remaining absent on the day of voting for the Rajya Sabha polls.

"I have received the letter from BJP. Appropriate action according to the law will be taken after through examination," speaker Pradip Kumar Amat told reporters here.

The tribal MLA from Bonai in Sundergarh district defied party`s whip and deliberately did not participate in the voting in order to help the ruling BJD`s third candidate to win the polls, BJP`s state president Jual Oram alleged in his letter to the Speaker.

Choudhury was among the three MLAs (two others from Congress) who did not participate in the polling. The party suspended him suspecting horsetrading during the 2010 RS polls.

Meanwhile, Congress had also suspended Shibaji Majhi, its MLA from Lanjigarh assembly segment from Kalahandi district, after release of an audio tape. Majhi was suspended from the Congress for defying party whip.
