Cuttack: Like the OPL team auction, the players auction for the forthcoming T20 tournament that was held here also threw some surprises when upcoming Orissa all-rounder Biplab Samantray was owned by Cuttack Barabati Tigers for a whopping price of Rs 4.60 lakh while many other star players, including Pravanjan Mallick went unsold.

The OPL auction for the players was held at OCA conference hall here yesterday with plenty of action that promises the first edition of the home version to end up with significant success.

The Mahadeb Pati Cuttack team also signed up another promising all-rounder Bibhudutt Panda for Rs 2.20 lakh. With only Rs 1.20 lakh in its purse, Cuttack team is likely to depend heavily on its catchment area players who are graded in E category with base price of a paltry Rs 10,000.

The most surprising aspect of the auction was the price with which international players were sold. Former India opener S S Das went for Rs 1.80 lakh when Dhenkanal team signed him. Similarly, the other international star and medium pacer Debashis Mohanty was signed up by Angul Tuskers for Rs 1.65 lakh.

Another notable purchase was that of Paresh Patel who was signed up by Bhubaneswar Jaguars for Rs 3.90 lakh. Natraj Behera also reaped rich rewards when Rourkela team picked him up for Rs 2.90 lakh. Niranjan Behera and Rakesh Mohanty went up with same price (Rs 2.20 lakh) for Berhampur and Puri teams. Out of a total of 50 players listed in Grade `A` whose base price were pegged at Rs 60,000, as many as 19 remained unsold. Similarly in Grade B whose base price was Rs 40,000, a total of six players remained unsold out of a total of 15 players.

While players listed in Grade C and D were auctioned on the day, the teams are allowed to pick up the players from Grade E and other unsold players after negotiations individually. The teams are asked to submit their player list to OPL governing body by Monday.
