Bhubaneswar: Fire officials today rescued a 49-year- old woman who had jumped off a bridge near Hanspal into the Kuakhai river in a bid to end her life.
The woman, identified as Sumitra Kumari Das was rescued after getting swept by the river current for around 6 kms from the spot where she had attempted suicide.
As per reports, Sumitra a resident of Behera Sahi in Nuapalli area of Bhubaneswar was under depression after losing her son to a road accident in 2008. To add to the miseries, her husband went missing three years ago. A complaint in this regard was lodged at a police station in Koraput, informed police sources.
After the woman attempted suicide today, a rescue team of Fire department fished her out of the waters near the Tankapani road, informed officials. The woman was immediately rushed to the Capital hospital where her condition is now stated to be stable.

Earlier, a police team lead by Bhubaneswar DCP Anup Sahu rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation.
Meanwhile efforts of the rescue team were lauded by senior officials of the Odisha Police who announced a special felicitation for them.
