Bargarh: Normal life came to a standstill in Bargarh due to a dawn-to-dusk bandh called by the Koshal State Coordination Committee on Thursday to protest farmers’ plight.

The members of the association blocked roads at many places bringing vehicular movement to a grinding halt in the town.

However, emergency services and educational institutes remained operational as the protesters spared the services from the shutdown in view of the ongoing examinations.

The bandh called by the coordination committee is also being supported by Congress, BJP and Aam Aadmi Party. Besides, the District Lawyers’ Association and many social organisations are also supporting the bandh.

According to sources, the committee called the 12-hour bandh demanding that the state government should admit crop loss as the main reason behind the farmer suicides in the state and to provide Rs 5 lakh compensation to the family members of each deceased farmer.

Besides, the committee has also demanded input subsidy for the drought-hit farmers, the sources added.
