Sonepur: As many as 22 migrant labourers were rescued from Hanumangada in neighbouring Telangana, Sonepur sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Bhabani Shankar Udgata said here today.

All the rescued persons, including seven women and seven children, hail from Papi village of Subarnapur district, he added.

A five-member police team had gone to Telangana and rescued the labourers from a brick kiln warding off stiff resistance from its owner, said the police officer.

Describing their plight there, a rescued labourer said, “We used to be beaten up whenever we asked the owner of the brick kiln for the wages. Food was not given to us for consecutive three to four days.”

Notably, family members of the rescued workers had lodged complaints with the district labour officer and the superintendent of police (SP) alleging torture on the migrants.
