Berhampur: Jaundice has spread in some parts Ganjam district with the water-borne disease affecting at least 15 people in Samantiapalli village near Patrapur so far.

A 22-year-old man from Patrapur died on Friday due to suspected jaundice at MKCG Medical College and Hospital, while a medical team led by additional district medical officer (public health) Pitambar Das visited the affected areas yesterday.

"The cause of the man's death will be confirmed only after verification of records. Preliminary reports show the man was suffering from cerebral malaria", the ADMO said.

The medical team has collected water samples from different sources for tests and also got the blood samples of the ailig population.

"Villagers are being sensitized to improve cleanliness and consume safe driking water, preferably after boiling it', said a doctor.

Panic has gried Berhampur town following spread of jaundice. The town is vulnerable ecause several water supply pipelines pass through drains.

Berhampur Municipal Corporation is creating awareness among people to prevent jaundice, health officer S K Das said.

The additional district medical officer said they have adequate stock of medicines to meet the challenge.

At least 20 to 30 beds in medicine ward of city Hospital would be earmarked for jaundice patients, but so far no case has been reported here.
