Jalandhar: Former Union Home Minister Buta Singh today appealed to Sharad Pawar to strengthen the Union Government in the "larger interest of the nation."

"Being the head of an important constituent of the Congress-led UPA II government, Sharad Pawar must strengthen the hands of Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for taking the country on the path of development and progress," Singh said.

While addressing a gathering of his NGO, Bharat Ekta Andolan, here, he said, "I had cut short my program to meet Pawar at New Delhi and impress upon him to put off from taking any step which is not in the interest of the nation."

"For preserving the unity and integrity of the country it was the need of the hour that UPA government comprising the secular forces must complete its term at the Centre," the Congress leader added.
