Kendrapara (Odisha): A group of unidentified miscreants broke open the office chamber of 175-year-old false point light house in the seaside Batighar village and ran away with ventilator equipments, police said today.

A joint investigation by officials of Kharinasi marine police station and Mahakalpada police station is presently underway to nab the culprits.

"The theft had occurred on Tuesday night. Police made an on-the-spot investigation after the light house caretaker lodged an FIR on Wednesday. We believe that the miscreants hailed from nearby villages. As the place is located at a place which is far-flung and is largely inaccessible, the outsiders might not have ventured into the area to commit the theft," said Amitabh Mohapatra, Inspector Mahakalpada police station.

The false point light house built way back in 1837 during the British Rule is incidentally the oldest along the eastern coast. Still security set-up of the Victorian age structure is left much to be desired. It is left unguarded following lack of staffing pattern, sources said.

Against the five sanctioned post, the all-important light house located at the Mahanadi deltaic region is manned by couple of staffs, said the sources.
