Sambalpur: A local court in Sambalpur district on Wednesday awarded life sentence to a man after convicting him of torching two teenage girls to death.

The Additional District Judge, Kuchinda, S K Pati sentenced Yogeshwar Majhi to life imprisonment after he was convicted of murder under section 302 of the IPC.

His associate Rama Kua was given seven years` rigorous imprisonment under section 115 of the IPC.

The court which took dying statement of one of the victims pronounced the judgement after recording statement of 18 witnesses.

According to prosecution, Snehalata Dhan (16) and her younger sister Sanjukta Dhan (14) were burnt alive by Majhi at Tureinitimal village under Mahulipali police station area on March 29, 2009.

Majhi, who professed love to the elder sister, poured petrol on them and set the duo ablaze when Snehalata spurned his advances. Majhi had also suffered burn injuries in the incident and arrested subsequently.

While Snehalata died on the spot, her sister gave a statement before succumbing to her injury on way to hospital.

The girls, who had lost their father earlier, were staying at their uncle`s house when the incident took place.
