Rajkot: Former BJP general secretary K N Govindacharya on Wednesday slammed both the ruling Congress as well as the main Opposition BJP over corruption.

"Congress and BJP are equally responsible for the present situation where corruption has spread from top to bottom in every field," Govindacharya said, adding that the country badly needed a strong opposition party, which BJP was not.

"The country must have a strong Opposition....but unfortunately the BJP has failed to play that role," the former BJP leader said while talking to reporters here.

He said people were taking to the street on the issue of corruption because it was not being discussed in Parliament.

Terming the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as an honest man, he said nevertheless, the Prime Minister was also equally responsible for the scams committed by his ministers, such as A Raja.

It was not enough to be just an honest man, but it was Singh`s duty to prevent the corruption, Govindacharya said, adding that Prime Minister should step down as he had been named by Raja in the court.

Govindacharya was here to take part in the rally `Youth Against Corruption`.
