Jajpur: Five members of a dacoit gang were arrested while planning to loot cash to the tune of Rs 40 lakh on the national highway (NH) No-5 near Sathipur in Jajpur district, police said today. Foiling the plan of the armed dacoits to loot the cash being transported to Balasore in a vehicle from the Kalinga Nagar steel hub in Jajpur district, a police team chased the gang members and nabbed them late last night.

A jeep, an automatic pistol, two magazines, 13 live bullets, one bhujali, one knife and four mobile phones were seized from the gang members. The gang was allegedly involved in a series of highway dacoity, robbery and loot cases on the stretch of NH between Khurda and Balasore.

The accused were identified as Chinmayananda Panda alias Jhunu of Agrahat in Choudwar, Sanjaya Bai alias Kalia of Adambaru?in Tangi, Sashibhusan Das alias Kalia of Nuasasan in Barachana and Trilochan Swain alias Sukuta of Padmanavpur in Barachana. "On interrogation, police knew that the dacoits were panning to waylay a vehicle with Rs 40 lakh coming Kalinga Nagar steel hub," said Paresh Kumar Rout, inspector-in-charge of Panikoili police station. "There are other members of this inter-district gang. We are taking steps to arrest them," said Deepak Kumar, Superintendent of Police of Jajpur.
