Srinagar:Three separatist guerrillas and a civilian were killed on Wednesday when soldiers repulsed an attack on an army camp in Jammu and Kashmir.

A senior police officer said the three militants who stormed the camp in Tangdhar town of Kupwara district were killed by security forces in a gun battle.

Tangdhar town is located close to the border with Pakistan. It is home to 3/1 Gorkha Rifles camp.

"A civilian working for the army was also killed in the encounter while a junior commissioned officer (JCO) was injured," he said. The officer was taken to a hospital.

Soon after the attack, a huge fire erupted in the petrol depot at the camp. Three AK-47 rifles were recovered from the slain militants, police said.

The Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) claimed responsibility for the attack.

A caller identifying himself as a JeM spokesman called a Srinagar-based news agency and said the attackers had inflicted "heavy casualties" on the army.
