Cuttack: A 20-year-old college student was arrested by Cuttack city police on Wednesday for allegedly killing his classmate and throwing his body into river water over a triangular love affair.

Police said they arrested Amulya Sahoo (20), a student of Stewart Science College here and a native of Dharmasala of Jajpur district, for murdering Abinash Mohanty (20) of the same College. The body of the deceased was retrieved from Mahanadi River on Monday morning.

Police said Amulya was disturbed over Abinash's intimacy with a girl of their class for whom Amulya too had a crush.

"Out of jealousy, Amulya from unregistered sim cards sent threatening SMSes to both Abinash and the girl. Amulya also sent same SMS to his own cell phone in order to show his innocence in the whole affair," said city DCP Sanjiv Arora.

On Sunday evening, Amulya called Abinash asking him to come immediately as he (Amulya) has identified the person, who was sending them the threatening SMSes. "At a deserted place, Amulya killed Abinash with a sharp weapon and threw his body into the river water," police said.

The deceased's family, however, suspect involvement of more persons in this case and urge police to investigate into it thoroughly.

"We had initial suspicion on Amulya, as he was the last person to have made a call to my son," said Abinash's father Prafulla Mohanty.
