Guwahati: Terming as alarming the rising trend of crime against women, the National Commission for Women (NCW) on Tuesday called for a collective effort to tackle the issue.

NCW Member Charu Wali Khanna, who is currently on a trip to Assam, today said here that all sections of society must fight together to deal with instances of crime and discrimination faced by women, an official statement said.

Khanna took part in a meeting at the office of the Assam State Commission for Women where various issues were taken up.

Speaking on the issue of witch-hunting, she termed it as a "social evil" and said it has nothing to do with superstition and was more often a ploy to grab land of poor and uneducated women.

She also laid stress on the need to educate women, especially those from the tribal communities, about land rights.
