Hyderabad: As many as 426 persons, including 183 pedestrians, lost their lives and over 2,400 were injured in 2,590 accidents that occurred on the city roads till December 23 this year.

According to data from the Hyderabad Traffic Police (HTP), the number of accidents are slightly down this year when compared to the 2,797 cases, including 494 deaths, last year and 2,990 cases, inclusive of 481 deaths, in 2009. The road traffic injuries during 2010 were 2,662, while it stood at 2,908 during 2009.

There was a marked increase in penalties for different violations, with Hyderabad Traffic Police collecting amount of Rs 33.9 crore as compared to Rs 23.99 crore last year after registering 30.81 lakh cases and 25.85 lakh cases respectively as part of the overall enforcement including e-Challan cases.

The traffic cops are planning to further intensify enforcement against drunken-driving and to carry out special drives during 2012 to bring down the accidents and number of deaths.
