JNU set to hike MPhil, PhD seat intake by six fold

New Delhi: The student intake capacity of MPhil/PhD programmes at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has been given a massive facelift after the varsity authorities decided to substantially hike the number of seats from 102 to 720 for the next academic session.

The entrance tests for the programmes will be held between December 27 and 30 this year at various centres.

It is pertinent to note that due to implementation of 2016 University Grants Commission (UGC) 2016 regulation there was a massive seat cuts in both the MPhil and PhD programmes. About 86% of the seats were cut bringing the number of seats down from 970 to 102.

The seat cuts had sparked sharp protests from students’ federations earlier this year. It was made a major issue during the JNU Students Union (JNUSU) polls held recently. The newly elected panel had promised to tackle the issue in their election manifesto.

University authorities said that there will be 459 undergraduate seats for the BA programmes, 1,118 post graduate seats for programmes such as MA, MSc, and MTech. There are also 240 part time diploma and certificate courses seats.
