Kolkata: The National Council for Teachers Education (NCTE) has issued show cause notices to as many as 1,000 BEd and DEd colleges for failing to submit the necessary data through affidavits, said a senior Union Human Resource Development Ministry official.

"NCTE has already issued 1,000 show cause notices to stop affiliation with NCTE and thereafter, these colleges will not be able to admit students for BEd and DEd courses. 3,000 more show cause notices will be issued soon," said Anil Swarup, Secretary, School Education and Literacy, in the ministry.

A total of 16,000 BEd and D Ed colleges in India were asked to submit affidavit in respect to all the data. However, only 12,000 institutes filed affidavit, said Swarup.

He alleged that the biggest mafia in the education sector are some of these BEd and DEd colleges. While some colleges do not exist, there are some that exist in names only. “We took them on," IANS quoted Swarup as saying at an interactive session organised by Merchants' Chamber of Commerce in the Capital city.
