Cash in prison: Suspended Odisha jailer arrested

Bhubaneswar: Vigilance on Friday arrested the jailer of Sambalpur circle jail, Sushant Kumar Rout who was earlier suspended after Rs 18 lakh was recovered from his office.

Rout was arrested today after he failed to account for the money that was seized from his chamber during a raid on June 4, an official statement of the vigilance department said.

Earlier, Additional director general (Prisons) Arun Kumar Ray had suspended Rout yesterday basing on the recommendation by a joint probe by two DIG-level officers.

The joint inquiry was ordered in connection with the seizure of cash, 9 mobiles, narcotics and other items from the jailor s chamber.

The anti-corruption wing today also conducted simultaneous searches on Rout’s quarter inside the Sambalpur jail campus, his office, paternal house at Kalyanpur in Jajpur district on the basis of search warrant issued by the Hon'ble Special Judge, Vigilance, Sambalpur.
