Bhubaneswar: In what could be just the tip of the ice-berg of drug trafficking in Odisha, Central Excise (intelligence) officials on Tuesday busted a racket that was being run by several persons on ‘partnership’ basis.

Excise department sleuths seized brown sugar weighing nearly 300 grams while it was being smuggled in a car from Jaleswar to Bhubaneswar. Four persons have been arrested while the market price of the brown sugar is estimated to be around Rs 30 lakh in the local market.

The accused have been identified as Intaz Mallick, Yasin Bax, Sk Nassiumddin and Noor Sazat.

Official sources said all the accused had invested equally in procuring the brown sugar consignment from Kharagpur in Kolkata. According to sources, the smugglers were planning to share the profit among themselves after selling the contraband at several places in Bhubaneswar.

Acting on a tip-off, the officials intercepted the car on Kathajodi bridge in Cuttack and seized the contraband from the vehicle. Sources said that the car belongs to an advocate and further investigation in this connection is underway.
